Architect Frank Lloyd Wright was hired in the mid 1930′s to design a house for Mr. Edgar Kaufmann and his family. The Kaufmann family wanted the waterfall to be near their house, since it was a family treasure for 15 years. While designing the house, Wright gained inspiration from Japanese Architecture, by creating harmony between man and nature. The house has 3 floors, with ceilings that reach no higher than 6’4″ so that the eye can remain at a horizontal angle enabling the viewer to always see the outdoors. The interior of the house relates to it’s natural surrounding, exposing rocks as the sound waterfall can be heard throughout the whole house. The house has 3 bedrooms and a guest house.
Location: Will Run, Pennsylvania
Waterfall: Flows from the Bear Run Reserve, 1298 feet above sea level then breaks into a 30ft drop.
